Letter: Smoking habit smelly, deadly

Friday, April 25, 2003 | 9:15 a.m.

Regarding Jeanne Crayton's April 23 letter, "If you can't stand the smoke, stay at home":

So smokers have been inconvenienced. Well, since it is a very serious health problem, maybe inconvenience is the least of a smoker's worries. I will not stay home because 30 percent of the people in Nevada feel it is OK to pollute the air that others breathe with a known carcinogen.

I fully intend to lean on our cowardly legislators to pass some stricter restrictions on where people may smoke. Smokers can laugh at the laws in California, but they work. There was no economic hardship on businesses, and you can go to the grocery store or out to eat without coming home and smelling like an ashtray. It is very refreshing.

Smokers may complain all they want, but their habit (or addiction) isn't just stinky, it is deadly. And I for one do not intend to be killed by breathing in secondhand smoke, and I should not be forced to stay home because of inconsiderate smokers who feel it is their right to pollute my air.

I do not smoke because it is unhealthy, and maybe deadly.
