Las Vegas Area Fishing Report: Anglers facing inconsistencies by Lake Mead’s Boulder Beach

Friday, April 25, 2003 | 9:59 a.m.

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

For April 25, 2003

Anglers have been finding sporadic success fishing for striped bass in Lake Mead's Boulder Basin while the Overton Arm has been producing some consistent action.

A few stripers have been caught during the past week at Hemenway Harbor, around Boulder Beach, the Hemenway Wall and the dam. But the bite has been very inconsistent.

Boaters have enjoyed some success by fishing from the 33 Hole to Black Island. NDOW biologists believe the fishing for stripers should soon get underway near Lake Mead Marina.

Boaters who have been fishing recently in the Overton Arm have been finding stripers that range from 18 to 21 inches, from Fish Island toward the Virgin narrows. Stripers and channel catfish are also being caught with anchovies from Overton Beach toward St. Thomas and around Stewart's Point.

Topwater lures have been catching largemouth bass above Overton Beach Marina.

Channel catfish that weigh up to 6 pounds are being caught with live worms in the backwaters of Six Mile Cove.

NDOW stocked rainbow trout Thursday at Willow Beach.

The surface water temperature is at 50 degrees down by nearly 10 degrees in the past week. Largemouth bass are not yet being caught because of the cold water temperature.

Fishing has been fair for 12-inch rainbow trout and 8- to 9-inch brown trout. The rainbows are being caught with PowerBait while the browns are taking live worms.

Midges are preferred by anglers who are fly fishing while night crawlers and Mepps and Panther Martin lures are also catching fish.
