Letter: Society too soft on DUI offenses
Thursday, April 24, 2003 | 9:29 a.m.
I read Dan Kulin's article in the April 17 Sun about Chris Holt, the latest victim of a drunk driver and, I might add, not the last. I was touched to the point of tears for this young man.
We, the reading public, seldom see articles like this about victims. In the article, Mr. Holt's sister Melanie said she hopes the person responsible for her brother's death someday realizes what an impact it has had on the family.
I'm afraid, Melanie, this will have little impact on this person's life. He'll spend a few years in jail and return to his familiar lifestyle with the blessing of our society.
We have 2 million criminals in our prison system today. Do you out there honestly believe any of them care about their victims?
We're all looking at a judicial system in this country that is a total failure. You and I are paying dearly for this failure -- Mr. Holt, with his life, and his family with only memories of a life they could have had.
