Letter: It seems that ‘Tiger’ Woods is actually a hawk
Thursday, April 24, 2003 | 9:29 a.m.
Many Americans believe that the most meaningless and boring waste of time known to man is chasing a little ball around the grass all day on a water-wasting, pesticide-ridden, environmentally disastrous golf course. Nevertheless, we got a kick out of the very young Tiger Woods' much publicized success playing his golf, a game usually played by those 50 years older than Tiger.
But the very young and evidently naive Mr. Woods, to the delight of Republican conservatives, has recently publicly and bluntly stated that President Bush's invasion of Iraq was "necessary."
Realizing that Tiger spends his days practicing golf in the hot sun and doing car commercials still is no excuse for even one this young being so easily persuaded that the invasion of a tiny oil-rich country, which had absolutely nothing to do with Sept. 11, was perfectly OK.
However, when talented, intelligent, mature professionals Tim Robbins, Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon and many other celebrities dare to object to Bush's unprovoked "war," they are viciously attacked by ultra right-wing conservatives, and are falsely called socialists, communists and even traitors.
Because of his youthful theory that bloody war beats skillful diplomacy, Tiger should then be eager to stash his golf clubs and interrupt his lucrative career long enough to enlist in the military and serve his country as Elvis Presley and so many other celebrities have done.
After all, George Bush and company are already planning yet another war, this time in Syria, aren't they?
Tiger Woods is in superb physical condition and the perfect age to serve in our military, as many of us have already done. We'll wait and see. But let's not hold our breath.
