Nuke test buildings to be removed

The Energy Department's Sandia Site Office in New Mexico is inviting the public to comment on a proposal to dispose of 31 old buildings at the Tonopah Test Range, about 160 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

By removing the buildings, the Energy Department would launch a broad plan to revitalize the test facilities at the Tonopah Test Range. In the 1960s the Energy Department conducted safety experiments with nuclear materials at the Tonopah Test Range.

The structures include 17 Butler-type buildings used for storage, 10 trailers used as contractor living space and four larger, nonportable buildings.

The buildings are in poor condition. However, federal rules allow the public, local governments, Indian tribes and other interested parties to review and evaluate the effects on cultural sites.

The DOE will consider all written requests to participate as a consulting party.

The comment period is open until May 6.
