Savvy wine buys: Austin Vale Chardonnay ‘01
Wednesday, April 23, 2003 | 8:31 a.m.
A vale is another word for a valley, and in the case of the giant wine-producing nation Australia, the best place for growing premium grapes.
This wine is a prime example of Australian chardonnay, beautifully fruity, not overly oaked, and nicely structured. The wine is aged in small oak barrels, but not, apparently, for too long. There are hints of pineapple and other tropical fruits in the nose, and the finish is long and smooth.
But what it really noteworthy about this wine is the price. Compare it with California chardonnays at two and three times the price, and you'll understand why Australian wines rock with retailers.
Available at Wild Oats Markets, $6.99.
