Letter: No matter what, protect Red Rock
Wednesday, April 23, 2003 | 9 a.m.
I am writing in regard to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. I live in Arcata, Calif., and was recently on a vacation to the Lake Mead and Las Vegas area. I also visited Red Rock Canyon for the first time and fell in love with it.
It is amazing that there are pristine natural areas so close to a large urban area. Red Rock Canyon needs to be protected so that future generations can enjoy the region. However, if the plans to develop and build houses on Blue Diamond Hill and the district surrounding Red Rock Canyon become a reality, the area is in danger of being overrun with people and pollution.
There are economical as well as environmental factors involved here. Red Rock Canyon is home to many geologic formations, animals, and a wide variety of plant species that will be pushed out if the area is developed. Keeping places like these could also be beneficial to the economy of Las Vegas and surrounding cities because they offer a different kind of recreation for tourists, as well as residents of the area.
I am asking you to do what ever you can to support Senate Bill 358, which will hopefully stop the area from being developed. Anything else that you could do to help conserve Red Rock for future visitors would be appreciated by myself and anyone else who has a love for the outdoors.
