Regulators clear contractor accused of mob ties

TRENTON, N.J. -- State casino regulators have fully renewed the license of a Morris County demolition contractor that had been accused of mob ties.
The ruling issued last week by the Casino Control Commission means Maztec Environmental Inc. of East Hanover can do business with all Atlantic City casinos. The approval had been delayed while investigators looked into allegations that two company employees, who no longer work for the firm, had ties to the DeCavalcante crime family.
The investigation began last year while the company was preparing to demolish a Resorts Atlantic City hotel tower. Regulators eventually reached a compromise that allowed the company to do the work, but withheld the $400,000 it was due until the license renewal process was completed.
Maztec's owner, Mary Grace Mazzocchi, said she was "thrilled" that Maztec had been cleared of any impropriety, but was concerned that the accusations could taint its ability to do business in Atlantic City. Maztec has been licensed to do such work since 1997.
