Letter: Get tougher on drunken drivers

Monday, April 21, 2003 | 8:56 a.m.

We have unlicensed and drunken driver problems, in part, because warrants are allowed to gather dust. Nationally, we should do the following:

First offense -- two years.

Second offense -- five years.

Third offense -- 10 years.

Fourth offense -- throw away the keys.

As further punishment, we should, after the first offense, confiscate the vehicle and sell it by auction. Pay it off and put whatever monies are left into a victims' fund.

This reads hard. It will save lives, however.
