Consumer sentiment improves

Consumer sentiment improved more strongly than expected in recent weeks, according to the University of Michigan's mid-month survey of consumers. The report on consumer sentiment for April was said to have shown an increase to 83.2 from 77.6 in March, according to people in the market who had seen the report today. The index was well above market consensus, which had anticipated a smaller rise to 78.0.
