Boy, 14, killed in rollover after collision on Interstate 15

Friday, April 11, 2003 | 11:18 a.m.

A 14-year-old California boy died early today after he was ejected from a car that rolled over on Interstate 15 after being struck by another vehicle, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The boy was traveling with his family, who are residents of El Cajon, Calif. He died at the University Medical Center at 4:30 a.m., Trooper Angie Wolff, a Highway Patrol spokeswoman, said. The accident occurred at 10:45 p.m.

The accident triggered other crashes in the area. Including the fatality, there were eight accidents between 10:45 p.m. and 3:30 a.m., more than double the usual number, Wolff said. Traffic was snarled for several hours.

The victim was the only one of six passengers not wearing a seat belt, Wolff said. The boy's 31-year-old mother was driving the car. Another adult and three other children were passengers. They were treated at the scene.

The boy's name was not released pending notification of relatives, the Clark County coroner's office said.

The rollover occurred when a vehicle driven northbound by a 17-year-old North Las Vegas girl struck the northbound car in which the boy was a passenger, Wolff said. The teenage driver was not injured.

No names were immediately released and no citations were issued at the scene. The accident was still being investigated this morning, authorities said.
