Panel OKs name change

CARSON CITY -- By a 6-1 vote, the Senate Legislative Affairs and Operations Committee on Tuesday approved naming the Legislative Building after Sen. Lawrence Jacobsen, R-Minden, who served in the Legislature for a record 40 years.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, and Sen. Randolph Townsend, R-Reno, said term limits now prevent anyone from approaching Jacobsen's standard of longevity.
Raggio and Townsend, who co-sponsored Senate Bill 365, said Jacobsen worked tirelessly overseeing the construction of the building in 1970.
Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, dissented. She said the armory in Carson City is already named after Jacobsen; he is in the Senate Hall of Fame; and he has already been honored in a resolution passed by both houses.
"I don't think this building should be named after any individual or any party," Titus said.
