Pedestrian killed on Fremont Street

A pedestrian trying to cross Fremont Street north of Oakley Boulevard about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Metro Police said it appears that jaywalking was the cause of the accident.

The identity of the 40-year-old victim was not released, pending the notification of family.

Witnesses told police that the pedestrian was trying to cross three travel lanes in midblock, outside of any crosswalk, Metro detectives said.

The collision is being investigated by Metro's Traffic Bureau.

Body found in fire was stabbed

An autopsy performed Tuesday by the Clark County coroner's office on a body found in a fire has revealed that the victim is male and had been stabbed several times, Metro Homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said.

The victim appears to be white, between the ages of 20 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall and 175 pounds. He had a dental appliance affixed to his front teeth.

A vehicle leaving the scene was described as a newer model, dark gray, two-door compact car, Monahan said.

The body was found by Nevada Department of Transportation workers Monday afternoon in a fire off Lake Mead Drive, east of Hollywood Boulevard at the base of Sunrise Mountain.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro's homicide section at 229-3521 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Binion's Horseshoe has raised the reward to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man who robbed the casino March 26.

The robber, posing as a customer, forced his way into a cashier's cage, Metro Police said. He told employees he had a weapon and grabbed cash from the money drawers. He was last seen walking north toward the California hotel. He had a black suitcase on wheels.

The robber is described as a white or Hispanic man between the ages of 35 and 40, about 5 feet 10 inches and 200 pounds with a medium complexion and straight black hair, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro's robbery section at 229-3591 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Five charged in marijuana case

Five men have been charged in a federal drug case that included more than a ton of marijuana.

Arrests were made Friday in a joint investigation by the FBI and Metro Police called Operation Chronic. Seven search warrants were served in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas in the course of the investigation as the drugs were intercepted Friday night, an FBI spokesman said.

A total of 2,649 pounds of marijuana believed to have originated in Mexico was recovered.

Three Las Vegans, Charles Chelli, 27, Scott Messner, 23, and James Raymundo, 29, and two Californians, Ernesto Renteria, 26, and Fernando Hurtado, 31, were arrested in the operation. Additional arrests in the case are pending, but FBI officials would not comment further on the case.

Chelli and Raymundo face charges of conspiracy and distribution of a controlled substance, while the other three defendants face charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute.
