Casino faces $4 million verdict over attack

CAMDEN, N.J. -- A man permanently disabled during a robbery outside an Atlantic City casino has been awarded $4 million because it did not provide adequate security for its patrons.

Felicisimo Fuentes Jr., 66, of Cherry Hill, suffered permanent brain damage when he was attacked near the Trump Marina Hotel Casino on April 8, 2000. Fuentes was attacked after he dropped his wife off at Trump Marina Hotel Casino, where she worked part-time as a dealer, and parked in the nearby Harrah's casino lot.

Fuentes was on a walkway that leads to the two casinos when he was knocked unconscious by an unknown assailant. His lawsuit claimed that Trump Marina security officials knew the walkway was the site of past crimes but failed to make necessary improvements.

The Camden County jury deliberated for about two hours Tuesday before reaching its verdict. They also awarded $800,000 to Fuentes' wife, Ester, who has been caring for her husband since their health insurance benefits expired.
