Airlines cut fares
Tuesday, April 8, 2003 | 11:24 a.m.
United Airlines and Northwest Airlines joined a fare sale today launched by Delta and American a day earlier to try to reinvigorate U.S. air travel, which has been slowed by war and severe acute respiratory syndrome.
United spokesman Chris Brathwaite said the nation's No. 2 airline was matching Delta's prices in competing markets. Northwest also matched the Delta fare sale in markets where the airlines compete, spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch said.
American Airlines, the nation's biggest carrier, matched the fare sale Monday.
The tickets -- some as low as $44 one-way -- require a week's advance purchase, with the lower fares unavailable for most holiday periods. The fares are valid for travel Monday through Thursday and on Saturday, from April 14 through Oct. 1. Tickets must be purchased by April 16.
