PUC OKs three energy deals

The state Public Utilities Commission last week approved three long-term energy contracts for Nevada Power Co.
The deals includes a 325-megawatt pact with Mirant Americas, 200 megawatts from Panda Gila River LP and 100 megawatts with Calpine Energy Services. Those deals will serve both annual supply and peak summer demand.
Walt Higgins, president and CEO of Sierra Pacific, Nevada Power's parent company, told investors in a conference call last week that the company had secured about 90 percent of its required peak supply for this summer. Nevada Power generates less than 50 percent of the energy it supplies to customers.
