Man convicted in prostitution case
A Chicago man has been convicted by a federal jury of transporting a 16-year-old girl and an adult woman to Las Vegas for prostitution.
Quinton Williams, 41, was found guilty Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson of transporting a female and a minor for prostitution, money laundering, sex trafficking of children and interstate travel in aid of racketeering.
Williams is scheduled to be sentenced on June 20, and could face up to 50 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
Driver dies after pickup crashes
A 49-year-old man was killed Thursday after losing control of his 1985 Toyota pickup truck on Industrial Road near Stardust Road, Metro Police said.
The crash occurred about 7 a.m. Witnesses said the truck was heading south on Industrial when it veered to the right and hit the curb twice before driving onto the sidewalk. It sideswiped a metal light pole and continued south before colliding head-on with a wooden power pole, police said.
The driver sustained critical injuries and was taken to University Medical Center, where he died shortly after arriving. The Clark County coroner's office did not release his name this morning, pending family notification.
Woman, 79, hit in street
A 79-year-old woman suffered critical injuries after she was hit by a sport utility vehicle while walking across Tropicana Avenue near Burnham about 7 p.m. Thursday, Metro Police said.
As Dolores Carpenter of Las Vegas was trying to cross the street mid-block, outside the crosswalk, she stepped into the path of a westbound 2002 Jeep Cherokee, of Las Vegas, police said.
The driver braked, police said, but was unable to avoid hitting Carpenter. She was taken to University Medical Center and was listed in critical condition this morning.
