Discussion set for sex shops

Thursday, April 3, 2003 | 9:14 a.m.

A revised Clark County plan to herd sexually oriented businesses into an area west of Interstate 15 has been set for discussion and possible adoption April 16. The Clark County Commission has debated the proposal for most of a year. North Las Vegas officials squawked over an earlier version of the "adult use overlay district," which would have created what they called a red-light district adjacent to their city.

The proposal has been stalled as county staff tries to resolve a tangle of potential constitutional issues and opposition from landowners near the area.

Commissioner Myrna Williams, who began the debate on the issue a year ago, has said her concern is that adult-use businesses such as adult book stores and strip clubs are permitted in common industrial zones. But with more people squeezing into the county, homes and churches are increasingly close to such zones.
