20 percent of officials miss filing deadline

Thursday, April 3, 2003 | 10:06 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- An estimated 20 percent of Nevada's 1,800 public and elective officials have missed the deadline for filing their financial disclosure statements with the state Ethics Commission.

Commission Executive Director Stacy Jennings said Wednesday the office had not received about 475 statements by the March 31 deadline.

All state constitutional officers, which include Gov. Kenny Guinn, and all members of the Assembly met the deadline.

Jennings said three of the 21 state senators missed the filing date by one day and were fined $25. They were Sens. Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, Maurice Washington, R-Sparks, and Mike McGinness, R-Fallon.

Jennings said some of the financial disclosure statements might be in the mail and would be considered on time if postmarked by March 31.

Those who don't file are fined $25 a day for the first seven days they are late; $50 per day from 8-15 days; and $100 per day after that. There is no cap on the fine.
