Savvy wine buys: ‘02 Van Loveren Chardonnay Reserve

Wednesday, April 2, 2003 | 8:11 a.m.

The Western Cape area of South Africa is producing some of the world's greatest wines for the money at the moment, thanks to the devalued Rand, that country's unit of currency. This region has a long tradition of wine production; indeed, more than 150 years and still going strong.

One of the best grapes to show off the region is sauvignon blanc, and this wine, firm, smooth and long in the finish, is a fine example. It isn't grassy, the adjective applied to many French and California sauvignon blancs, and the fruit is forward. Drink it now, as an aperitif, with seafood, pasta or poultry.

Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $18.99.
