Reid wants to add $400 million

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., wants to add $400 million for nuclear material safety to President Bush' $74.7 billion war budget request.
Included in that money is $1 million for the Energy Department to study the vulnerability of nuclear waste transportation containers to terrorist attack. Nevada lawmakers have long argued that it would be dangerous to ship waste from nuclear reactors across the country to the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain.
"We must do everything we can, both at home and abroad, to prevent terrorists from getting their hands on deadly radioactive material," Reid said.
Reid intended to introduce an amendment today that proposes to spend:
The remaining $69 million would be used for a number of other programs, including $10 million for nuclear material detection at U.S. borders; $10 million for new technologies that can spot terrorist groups developing nuclear weapons; and a $2 million in-depth study of Iraq's nuclear program.
