Minnesota recruit commits to UNLV

Tuesday, April 1, 2003 | 9:29 a.m.

Andy Hannan, a 6-foot-6 swingman from Minneapolis, has orally committed to UNLV and basketball coach Charlie Spoonhour.

"I just told him I was taking no more visits, and he said, 'Good, good.' He said he had just been at spring training in Florida, and he talked about coming up here after the Final Four," Hannan said. "I feel like it will be a good fit."

Illinois, Wisconsin and Wyoming also were interested in Hannan, who led small-division Minneapolis Community and Technical College to a 25-3 record in 2002-03.

His averages of 20.5 points and 7.2 rebounds and 66 steals led the Marauders, and he nearly led MCTC in assists.

Oral commitments are non-binding, but Hannan said he is eager to sign his letter of intent and deliver it to Spoonhour, either in person if the Rebels' coach is in town or via fax on April 16, the first day of the spring signing period.

Coaches cannot comment about a recruit until they have received a signed letter of intent.

Hannan played sparingly at Division I Binghamton (N.Y.) out of Minneapolis Holy Angels High, then landed at MCTC when he was only offered a walk-on spot at Minnesota. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Spoonhour has one scholarship left, and Barton County (Kan.) point guard Randy Pulley and Los Angeles City small forward Romel Beck are other junior college players that the UNLV staff has pursued.
