Police search for dog killer

North Las Vegas Police are looking for whoever bound the legs of two dogs and then drowned the animals in a pool at 823 Agave Ave.

The first dog was found floating in an above ground pool Saturday. The second dog was found Tuesday, but police said both dogs may have been in the pool Saturday, and the second dog was not immediately seen because the water in the pool was cloudy.

Police are asking that anyone with information about this incident, or anyone who may have seen someone around the residence Saturday, call 633-9111.

Stock promoter receives 30 months

A former Las Vegas stock promoter was sentenced to 30 months in prison Thursday by U.S. District Judge Lloyd George.

Barclay Davis, 55, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and money laundering.

According to court records, between April 1993 and September 1997, Davis was engaged in a scheme to defraud the investing public and financial institutions by controlling and fraudulently affecting the market price of the stock of a publicly traded Las Vegas-based company.

The company, Combined Companies International Corp., was described as a manufacturer of medical products and video games. Davis and others falsely inflated the assets of the company, made false financial reports and illegally transferred stock.

The loss attributed to the defendant's actions was at least $2.5 million, court records state.

Davis, who will surrender to authorities to begin his sentence on Nov. 8, was also ordered to forfeit $308,500 and will be required to perform 200 hours of community service.

$9 million goes for drug program

The state will receive $9 million over the next three years from the federal government to put into programs to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among children.

Gov. Kenny Guinn said Thursday that 85 percent of the money goes to community-based programs and the rest will be used to evaluate whether the efforts are working.

The money comes from the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The governor said agencies and individuals worked two years to get the money, which will be doled out at $3 million a year.

The state Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse will run the project that starts Oct. 1.
