Volunteers can help plant trees at canyon
The U.S. Forest Service will be taking part in the ninth annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday.
Forest Service officials and local volunteers will be planting trees in the Kyle Canyon area as part of the largest one-day volunteer restoration of public lands.
All Southern Nevada residents are invited to participate. Volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kyle Canyon ranger station. Trees, shovels and water will be provided.

Free poetry contest deadline is Dec. 5
Deadline for entries to the semi-annual Celebration of Poetry, sponsored by Creative Communication of Logan, Utah, is Dec. 5.
The free contest is open to adults and schoolchildren in Nevada, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. Over $2,500 in prizes are awarded to the winning poets and $500 in grants are awarded to schools.
Five separate divisions are offered with 10 top winners in each division. The divisions are: Grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and adult. Each poet may submit one original poem, 21 lines or less.

For student entries, please list grade, school name, school address and teacher's name. Poems of merit will be invited to be published in an anthology.
Teachers with five accepted poets receive a free book. Schools with 15 or more accepted poets also receive a free book and qualify to apply for a language arts grant. For more information, call (435) 713-4411.
The 18th annual Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation presents its 5K Walk-A-Thon charity event beginning at 7 a.m. with registration, followed by the walk at 8 a.m. Saturday at the University Nevada, Las Vegas.
