Poetry to spotlight Black History Month

Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 | 8:51 a.m.

U.S. Bank is accepting entries for its 10th annual African-American Reflections poetry contest in celebration of Black History Month 2003.

The contest is open to Clark County students in kindergarten through grade 12 and is intended as a resource to complement history, English and social studies curricula in local schools.

The theme of this year's contest, "Inspirations for Black History Month," asks students to identify individuals whose lives, accomplishments or actions have been the inspiration for America to create Black History Month.

An online entry system has been developed for the contest by Teratis Systems Co., a Web application developer. Students must submit their poems through the system at poetry.usbank.com.

A panel of local judges will evaluate each poem and select 10 winners. Winners will receive a $100 award for use in their classrooms.

The call for entries has been distributed to local schools. Anyone interested in additional copies should call U.S. Bank at (858) 642-4639.
