Volunteers needed for Moapa project
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking volunteers Saturday to help restore stream habitat at the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge as part of a National Public Lands Day celebration.
Gov. Kenny Guinn proclaimed Saturday as Public Lands Day in Nevada, which is a day for families and groups of all ages to volunteer to "give something back" to America's millions of acres of public lands.
The Bureau of Land Management will participate in six NPLD events in Nevada. Getting people out into their public lands helps them understand the importance of public lands in their community. Call (775) 861-6515.
The Moapa Valley project will take place from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. when volunteers will remove weeds and transplant native plants. By working to revegetate the site, volunteers will restore and recreate historically suitable stream for the endangered Moapa dace and other native species.
Volunteers should bring work gloves, hat, sun screen, water bottles and shovels, and wear old clothes and close-toed shoes that can get wet and dirty. To register to volunteer, call 515-5453.
