Bail reduced in drive-by killing

One of six alleged gang members charged in the drive-by shooting death of a North Las Vegas woman more than a year ago could be released on bail after a judge declared he wasn't a flight risk.
At a Monday hearing, Judge Sally Loehrer reduced bail from $500,000 to $50,000 in the case of Jamon Brooks, 23, who faces multiple charges including attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder in the May 2001 killing of Gwendolyn Jones.
Defense attorney David Brown argued that while Brooks was at the scene at the time of the shooting, he didn't do anything wrong. He said Brooks turned himself in to police twice after seeing his picture on the news.
While prosecutors allege co-defendant Joey Clark and not Brooks was the shooter, prosecutor Ed Kane said bail shouldn't be reduced because significant evidence links Brooks to the murder, including an eyewitness who allegedly saw and heard Brooks on a cell phone telling Clark where the victim was moments before Clark arrived at the scene.
Jones, 35, was caught in the crossfire while standing in a yard during her sister's wake. Four others were wounded in the shooting, including an 8-year-old girl. Brooks' trial is scheduled for October 21.
