Rebels post win over Central Florida
Sophomore midfielder Boomer Arbelaez scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to send the UNLV men's soccer team past Central Florida, 3-2, on the final day of the UNLV / FILA Classic held Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Arbelaez, a former Gatorade State Player of the Year out of Bishop Gorman High School, connected from 10-yards out on a leftside cross by sophomore defender Chris Henderson to seal the deal for the Rebels. This marked his first career goal in a Rebel uniform, after transferring from the University of San Francisco.
UNLV's freshman goalkeeper Jenna Huff made seven saves, while Arizona State's Kelly Fitzgerald earned the shutout with six saves.
Simmons drunk at time of fatal crash
Former NFL linebacker Wayne Simmons, who died in a one-car accident, had a blood alcohol level of .19 percent when he was killed Aug. 23 on Interstate 70 near Independence. Missouri's legal limit is .08 percent.
Checking in at No. 10, the Irish (4-0) moved up two places from last week after Saturday's 21-17 victory at Michigan State.
Harwell calls his final game in Detroit
Ernie Harwell called his last Tigers game in Detroit. The 84-year-old radio announcer will retire after 42 seasons with the team and 55 seasons of calling major league games.
The Tigers presented Harwell with Comerica Park's home plate, and news that the stadium's press box will be officially dubbed "The Ernie Harwell Media Center" from 2003.
Serena wins event
Serena Williams rebounded from a shaky start and beat Kim Clijsters 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the Toyota Princess Cup in Tokyo and capture her seventh title of the year.
Wambach leads South
Abby Wambach scored two goals and added an assist to earn MVP honors as the South beat the North 6-1 in the inaugural WUSA All-Star game in Portland, Ore.
