Letter: No doubt, Bush will put us at odds with world

Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 | 5:29 a.m.

In his speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 12, President Bush indicated he "doubted" that Saddam Hussein would comply with international requests for inspection of Iraq for weapons of mass destruction.

On the other hand, I "doubt" that President Bush has a policy of positive action to assist the increasing numbers of poor in an American society in which the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to widen. I "doubt" that he will act to seek accessible, affordable health care for all Americans. I "doubt" that he understands the need to support proposals for alternative forms of energy.

What I "don't doubt" is that he is seeking a cover for his bankrupt domestic policies. I "don't doubt" that he is formulating a new global policy in which the U.S. acts unilaterally when our goals are thwarted, making us a neo-imperialist nation.

And I "don't doubt" that military action toward Iraq will create more antagonism toward the United States and provide a greater rationale for terrorist retaliation.

When the United States ceases acting like an internationall bully, perhaps the real road to peace can open up.
