Six airlines want National slots

Six airlines have asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to take over two National Airlines slots at Ronald Reagan National Airport -- and three say they would provide flights between Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas if they succeed in getting them.

Phoenix-based America West Airlines announced Tuesday that it had petitioned the Department of Transportation for the slots. A DOT spokesman said US Airways, Delta, Frontier, American and United airlines also have asked to take over the slots.

DOT's Bill Mosley said US Airways, Frontier and America West say they want to use the slots for nonstop round trips between the central Washington airport and McCarran International Airport.

Delta said it would provide flights between Washington and Salt Lake City and American and United would add flights between Washington and Los Angeles International Airport.

Las Vegas-based National Airlines has a request before the DOT to extend the Oct. 26 deadline by which National must use or lose the Washington slots.
