Desert Pines gets nod against C-M

Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 | 9:42 a.m.

Teams ranked jointly by the Sun and the SparksTribune

Ouch! Did we say something about shooting for a perfect week? Apparently, that was more than enough to jinx almost half of last Friday's picks. Humbled, but still confident, we'll simply say anything over .500 would be nice. Read on to see whether Sierra Vista finally earns a nod.

Friday's Games CIMARRON-MEMORIAL (1-1) at DESERT PINES (2-0), 7 p.m.

The Spartans will try to borrow a page from Palo Verde's book (see week one's near-upset) and control the clock. Once again, the Jaguars' superior athleticism should bail them out.

Desert Pines 19, Cimarron 14

GREEN VALLEY (0-2) at LAS VEGAS (2-0), 7 p.m.

The Gators were a trendy pick a month ago, but won't get much done against the Wildcats' stingy defense and improving offense.

Las Vegas 21, Green Valley 7

SIERRA VISTA (2-0) at BASIC (1-1), 7 p.m.

What looked like a clunker in the preseason is suddenly full of storylines, as two teams on the rise match up.

Basic 27, Sierra Vista 14

CHEYENNE (2-0) at WESTERN (1-1), 7 p.m.

Still flying under the radar, the Shields roll on.

Cheyenne 34, Western 6

BONANZA (1-1) at PALO VERDE (1-1), 7 p.m.

The Bengals looked good against Coronado, but beating the physical Panthers is a tall order.

Palo Verde 23, Bonanza 3

ELDORADO (0-2) at DURANGO (0-2), 7 p.m.

The Blazers may be down, but they're far from out in 2002.

Durango 27, Eldorado 7

CHAPARRAL (1-1) at BISHOP GORMAN (1-1), 7 p.m.

The Gaels should rebound after a tough loss to Foothill last week.

Gorman 26, Chaparral 6

CLARK (0-2) at RANCHO (1-1), 7 p.m.

The Rams are out for blood after spilling theirs vs. Cheyenne last week.

Rancho 18, Clark 7

MOJAVE (0-2) at FOOTHILL (2-0), 7 p.m.

John who? The post-Ford Falcons might be even better.

Foothill 35, Mojave 7

VALLEY (0-2) at CORONADO (1-1), 7 p.m.

After a week two letdown, the Cougars get back on track.

Coronado 10, Valley 8

CENTENNIAL (2-0) at MAR VISTA (Calif.) (0-0-1), 7 p.m.

The state's largest school visits a San Diego-area school of 1,400. The Bulldogs buck the out-of-town rule.

Centennial 20, Mar Vista 10

BONITA VISTA (0-1) at SILVERADO (1-1), 7 p.m.

Hold onto your hat, Skyhawk fans. A solid San Diego-area Division I opponent comes calling.

Bonita Vista 42, Silverado 13

Last week: 6-5. 2002 record: 15-8 (.652)
