Rebel women post shutout

Freshman Nickie Olson scored two second-half goals in the UNLV women's soccer team's 3-0 victory over Southern Utah Tuesday night at Thunderbird Soccer Field in Cedar City.

With 23:20 on the clock, senior co-captain Cosette (Joffs) Packer scored her second game-winning goal of the season on a header at the center of the box off a deflection from senior Kelly Janke to put the Rebels on the scoreboard.

Packer leads the team in scoring with 10 points on five goals and has a three-game goal streak.

Olson, a local product from Centennial High, continued the scoring in the second half, taking advantage of a rightside pass from senior Melicia Wright at 49:01. In the 78th minute, Olson headed the ball off a cross to the upper left corner from freshman Angie Inzana to complete the 3-0 shutout.

Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Huff earned her second shutout of the year with eight saves, while Southern Utah's Megan Flowers had 11 saves on 30 shot attempts by UNLV.

The Rebels (5-1-1) remain on the road this weekend with a pair of nonconference matches versus Northern Arizona on Friday at 7 p.m. and Arizona State on Sunday at 11 a.m.

UNR improved to 8-1 and has not lost a game in its last six matches, while UNLV fell to 4-6.

UNLV struggled offensively, hitting only .155 (42-24-116) in the match to Reno's .323 (46-14-99).

Patricia Assuncao and Tarin Keith each tallied 10 kills in the match. Keith also added a team-high six digs and a pair of service aces.

Leiana Oswald dropped nine kills on the Wolf Pack. She also finished with five digs and a block assist. Sheila Ocasio-Clemente blocked four balls, one solo and three assisted. She also had four kills without an error.

UNLV travels to Fresno, Calif., this weekend for the Fresno State Quadrangular. The Rebels will join Sacramento State, San Diego and host Fresno State for the two-day round-robin tournament.

Westphal will serve as the women's recruiting coordinator and coach the breasstroke and individual medley events for the men's and women's programs. He joins the Rebel staff after a three-year stint as the top assistant at the University of Pacific.
