Editorial: Law should govern any transfer of park

Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 | 8:58 a.m.

We mean no disrespect to Las Vegas Councilman Michael Mack, but his word that Floyd Lamb State Park will retain its rural character if it's deeded over to the city is not the assurance that people are seeking. Users of this park, which is defined by its wetlands and open space for people who want to unwind in a quiet atmosphere, are worried, with good reason, that under city ownership the park would eventually be transformed. Where there was once plenty of room to unfold a blanket and quietly read a book or have a picnic there will eventually be ball fields or subdivisions, many people worry. Mack insists the city would maintain the integrity of the park.

If the city continues to pursue ownership of the park, there is only one way to ensure the permanence of its current character. Because City Council members come and go and spoken promises they make are forgotten as the years roll by, any transfer of the park must be governed by state law. The Legislature, before any transfer of the park to the city, should hold public hearings and then, by law, guarantee its rural character for all time.
