Anderson’s arm, bad defense doomed Rebels

Compiled by Steve Guiremand

First quarter: Oregon State 23-0

The Man: Oregon State sophomore quarterback Derek Anderson, doing a nice Drew Bledsoe impression, completed 7 of 10 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

Turning Point: Already leading 7-0, Anderson looped a perfect pass down the sideline between Rebel defenders Daniel Jones and Connie Brown to wide receiver James Newson for a 28-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Game within the game: Oregon State was simply more superior on both sides of the ball. The Beavers outgained the Rebels, 165 to minus-16 yards, in the quarter.

Second quarter: Oregon State 37-7

The Man: Anderson again. He finished the half with 15 completions in 19 attempts for 243 yards and four touchdowns.

Turning Point: Anderson completed a swing pass to former Eldorado High star Steven Jackson and the 6-foot-2, 227-pound Jackson bulldozed his way over three Rebel defenders for a three-yard touchdown to increase the Beavers' lead to 30-0.

Game within the game: The 37 points were the most allowed in a half by a UNLV team since 1996 when Nevada-Reno performed the feat.

Third quarter: Oregon State 44-10

The Man: This is a recording. It's Anderson again, this time completing 5 of 7 passes for 113 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown strike to Shawn Kinter.

Turning Point: On first series after intermission, the Beavers drove 64 yards in five plays capped by Anderson's touchdown pass to Kinter.

Game within the game: Rebels' run defense was solid, holding the Beavers to 71 yards on 32 carries after three quarters. The pass defense, however, is another story.

Fourth quarter: Oregon State 47-17

The Man: Washington State transfer Deon Burnett saw his first extensive action and rushed for 27 yards on nine carries, including a one-yard touchdown run with 1:12 remaining.

Turning Point: Erickson began to substitute liberally in the quarter although several defensive starters, including former Cheyenne High star Lawrence Turner, were still on the field during UNLV's final scoring drive.

Game within the game: Despite being overwhelmed in the first half, the Rebels continued to play hard in the second half when they battled the Beavers even (10-10) on the scoreboard. UNLV concentrated on stopping Jackson (51 yards on 17 carries), but Anderson, who looks like a future NFL first rounder in the making, made them pay dearly.
