Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 | 10:59 a.m.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission representatives have scheduled an informal open house from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Las Vegas to discuss their role in regulating safety at the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
The session will be at the Clark County Transportation Building, 4701 W. Russell Road. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. They can meet NRC staff representatives, provide comments and ask questions.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission must license the Energy Department's plans for a high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The Energy Department cannot build, open or operate a repository without licenses from the commission.
Las Vegas NRC representatives are Robert Latta and Jack Parrott. NRC nuclear waste management and transportation officials from Rockville, Md., will also be at the open house and available for one-on-one discussions.
