Mayor not backing war

Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 | 9:43 a.m.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman says he opposes going to war with Iraq -- but he also questions whether President Bush or anyone else really cares about his opinion.

"I prefer we do not go to war," Goodman said at his weekly news conference Thursday.

In response to a question about Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's buildup of "weapons of mass destruction," Goodman said he was concerned, but said he felt that too could be resolved by means other than war.

Further grilled on what those alternatives could be, Goodman said, "I don't know, I'm not the president."

Goodman then assured viewers of the seemingly weird line of questioning that "Las Vegas will not be at war with anyone in the future."
