Casino suppliers in litigation

Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 | 11:09 a.m.

Las Vegas gambling equipment maker Shuffle Master Inc. sued today to stop WMS Gaming Inc. of Chicago from interfering with its efforts to promote software for a WMS slot machine at next week's G2E: Global Gaming Expo trade show and conference in Las Vegas.

Shuffle Master, in a U.S. District Court suit, said it took legal action after receiving letters from WMS claiming Shuffle Master's software -- a conversion kit that allows casino operators to put a Shuffle Master game in a WMS slot machine -- violated patent infringement laws.

"Over the past year we have openly and completely discussed our plans with various WMS executives. Now, on the eve of the gaming expo, WMS sent us written demand that we not show or sell our upgrade kit for the WMS 550 video slot machine," said Shuffle Master CEO Mark Yoseloff.

WMS officials could not be reached for comment on Shuffle Master's lawsuit.
