Sun Prep Athletes of the Week: Jeff Henle and Katy Barrett
Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 | 11:02 a.m.
JEFF HENLE
School: Sierra Vista
Class: Senior
Sport: Football
Last week: Henle, a starting wide receiver, caught five passes for 145 yards, including a pair of touchdowns, to lead the second-year Mountain Lions to their first varsity football victory, 22-12 over Chaparral. Henle hauled in a 49-yard scoring strike from Bryce Cresto in the first quarter, then added a 25-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. "The win was huge. I can't even really explain it," first-year Sierra Vista coach Ben Johnson said. "The kids had never won, and even though they've worked really hard, the wins really make you believe a little bit more. You can see a little bit more confidence, and the work ethic has also improved. They're excited, but still cautious."
KATY BARRETT
School: Palo Verde
Class: Junior
Sport: Golf
Last week: Barrett was the Panthers' low scorer in two matches at Eagle Crest, helping her squad open the season with a 2-0 record. On Tuesday, Barrett and teammate Jenna Cassell shot a 3-over 33 to lead Palo Verde to an impressive 192-222 win over two-time defending state champion Durango. And on Thursday, Barrett medaled with a 32 as the Panthers breezed past Sierra Vista 193-270. "We can always count on Katy. She's very focused, and she likes to achieve," Palo Verde coach Peggy Lair said. "I think on the right day, we can probably beat just about anybody, but everything has to be right."
