Letter: War with Iraq is no solution
Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 | 8:57 a.m.
I was born in the 1930s during the Great Depression when, on Wall Street, stockbrokers and investors alike suddenly found themselves financially ruined, and jumping out of high-story building windows to a horrible fate below. It was also a time (the Republican administration of President Hoover) when there were bread-and-milk lines for America's citizenry.
Amongst them in line were my older brothers and sister, who my mother had to send forth while she tended to me, her new baby. She never forgot those Depression days; and years later told me: "It never fails ... when the Republicans control the White House, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer!"
Now, once again, the Republicans are in control (President Bush), and thousands of workers are being dismissed from their employment almost daily. Once more, our country is faced with financial distress and possible ruination. What is the president's solution? Go to war with Iraq and put Americans back to work defending our homeland, and our young lads and heroes overseas.
Is all of this banging of war drums due to the upcoming elections in November, and his hoping to jump-start our economy by declaring war on Iraq? I have often heard the old saying ..."Never trouble trouble -- 'til trouble troubles you."
