Sun photographer wins award for famous photo
Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002 | 9:15 a.m.
In a photograph by the Sun's Ethan Miller, Alana Milawski, 3, waves an American flag as she sits on father Craig Milawski's shoulders during a candlelight vigil last September at the Thomas & Mack Center. The vigil honored those killed in terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., the day before. Miller's picture of the vigil gained international exposure, appearing on the cover of a Newsweek magazine commemorative issue, numerous websites and on billboards around the country, including one in New York's Times Square. The photo also earned him the National Headliners award for newspaper feature photography. "The little girl waving the American flag above a very ethnically diverse crowd just screams, 'This is what America is all about,' " contest judges wrote about the photo. On page 3, the Sun looks at Alana and her family a year later.
