Shooting claims life of one man
A man was shot to death and another was wounded Saturday night Lake Mead and Nellis boulevards.
The motive for the shooting was not clear, but it did not appear to be gang-related, Metro Police Lt. Tom Monahan said.
Gunfire erupted in front of an apartment complex at Lamont and Kell Lane, officers said, where numerous shots were fired. The apartment building as well as two pickup trucks were struck with bullets.
Both men were in the pickup trucks. They were taken to University Medical Center, where one victim was pronounced dead.
Anyone with information is asked to call Secret Witness at 385-5555 or the Metro Homicide Section at 229-3521.
Two arrested in killing of man
Two men have been arrested and charged with murder in the stabbing death of local driving school owner Daniel Miller, 58, whose body was discovered Thursday morning in his Paradise Road apartment, Metro Police said.
Anthony Prentice, 19, a friend who was known to stay at the apartment, was booked into Clark County Detention Center on a probation violation Thursday, Metro Homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said.
He was then charged with murder with a weapon on Saturday.
Also arrested Saturday was James Mark Harrison, 21, of Las Vegas on a charge of murder with a weapon.
Miller owned American Driver Education, a driving school on Flamingo Road, according to Clark County business license records.
Fraud sentence set at 100 months
A Las Vegas man was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 100 months in prison and ordered to pay $49,220 in restitution Friday for his part in a scheme to fraudulently obtain money from banks and other financial institutions.
Justin Stonecypher, who was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, had a major role in a conspiracy using fake driver's licenses and stolen checks to gain access to victims' accounts and money, prosecutors said.
Two killed in collision with truck
Two people died this morning when their car collided with a grease truck at Sunset Road and Green Valley Parkway in Henderson.
The two occupants in the car died in the accident about 3:30 a.m. The truck driver was not injured, police said.
Ceremonies honor Sept. 11 victims
Two ceremonies to remember victims of the Sept. 11 attacks will be held Tuesday.
The design for a memorial to Barbara Edwards, the Palo Verde High School teacher who died aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when it hit the Pentagon, will be unveiled 9:30 a.m. at the school's soccer field, 333 N. Pavilion Center Drive in Summerlin. For more information, call 799-1450.
Students at St. Viator School, to honor victims of the attacks, were to plant a "peace tree" at 1 p.m. between the school and St. Viator Catholic Church, on the southeast corner of Flamingo Road and Eastern Avenue.
It will be placed next to one planted in 1999 to honor victims of the Columbine High School shooting.
For more information, call 435-8849.
Man shot in Strip altercation
An 18-year-old man was shot and wounded early Sunday on the Strip after two groups of men started arguing, Metro Police said.
A group of 10 men were walking on Las Vegas Boulevard near Harmon Avenue about 2:20 a.m. Sunday when some other men in car shouted obscenities at them, police said.
The car stopped at a red light and the group of men on the street went up to the car throwing rocks and bottles. One of the men in the car fired a shot, hitting the 18-year-old man in the stomach, police said.
One of the men on foot apparently pulled out a gun and fired at the car, which sped away from the area, police said.
