Safety fair set at Army facility

Army Recruiters will host a safety fair at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Army's 6th Recruiting Brigade, 4539 N. 5th St. in North Las Vegas.

Displays will include the North Las Vegas Fire Demonstration Building, where adults and children are guided through a demonstration house that is "on fire" and taught how to crawl, stop-drop-and-roll; a North Las Vegas fire truck, Nevada Highway Patrol trooper and McGruff, the crime dog.

Children's photos and fingerprints will be taken, and the Nellis Health and Wellness Center, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Clark County Parks and the Nevada Division of Forestry will have exhibits and teach safety in their respective areas.

Credit counseling class to be held

The class Making Ends Meet and Dreams Come True will be offered from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday by Consumer Credit Counseling Service, 3650 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 32.

Test drives help literacy program

Drive for Literacy, a program that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Anthem Center at Sun City Anthem.

Instead of bringing books to the event, Drive for Literacy organizers are asking the public to test-drive a 2003 Grand Marquis. For each free test drive, 10 new books will be donated by Mercury, Del Webb Corp. and Random House to First Book and given to a local reading program in Southern Nevada.

Job fair to help employers, jobless

The Employment Guide of Las Vegas, a division of Trader Publishing, will hold a Job Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Texas Station.

The job fair will assist local area job-seekers for an interview for many open positions and to help employers find qualified applicants with a minimum of effort.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives presents the next How to Really Start Your Own Business workshop at 9 a.m. Thursday at 400 S. Fourth St.

SCORE counselors will cover marketing, cash flow, the business plan and a check list for licensing, permits and other requirements.

The $45 cost includes a 292-page reference manual and a workbook to help analyze business ideas.

Media roundtable meets Thursday

Working in Communications will host a media roundtable at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Palace Station to discuss how the news media has changed since Sept. 11.

Participants in the forum include John Overall, anchorman for KVVU Channel 5; Gavin Spittle, program director of KXNT 840-AM; and Charles Zobell, managing editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The forum will conclude with a question and answer session with the audience, where members of Working in Communications and their guests can share their memories and thoughts.
