Letter: Driver education is what’s lacking
Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 | 9:10 a.m.
Regarding the Sun's Sept. 1 story, "Danger zone":
I don't know, call me silly, but I don't have any trouble reading the signs on the beltway. Maybe the real problem is not the road, but the drivers on the road. I drive the beltway occasionally, and find that everyone, with the exception of myself, exceeds the speed limit by 15 to 20 mph.
The last time I drove the beltway, all the cars and trucks surrounding my car had the drivers talking on cell phones! That's six cars that I could see. How many more were inattentive is anyone's guess. But let's blame the roadway!
In Europe, the restrictions on driver's licenses are far greater than here. Here the main requirement is to parallel park.
Until something is done to educate the drivers in this country, we will continue to have this problem and no amount of signs or traffic enforcement will cure it.
