County backs wetlands bonds

The Clark County Commission on Tuesday endorsed a proposed $200 million state bond issue that would protect and enhance waterways and wetlands throughout the county and the state.

The issue will come before voters this November as the first ballot question. Hazel Wong, government relations director for Nevada's Nature Conservancy, said the bond money is critically needed.

The most recent bond issue for similar purposes came 12 years ago, she said.

"We urgently need this measure to preserve rivers, streams and our wildlife," Wong told the commission.

The bonds would fund wetlands protection and enhance recreational options statewide, but most of the funds would go to local projects. Among the projects and agencies that would receive funding:

The commission approved the endorsement 6-0, with Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates absent.
