Columnist Peter Benton: Powers, Larson team for win at LVCC

Tim Powers and Frank Larson won the Masters Flight at the Las Vegas Country Club's End of Summer Member-Member tournament with a score of 336.5. Coe Power/Dan Shapiro placed second with 342.5 followed by Kenny Epstein and Frank DeLee at 348.5.

Format was best ball of partners plus alternate nines with full handicap on the first day and best ball plus combined net on the second day.

Tom Sears and Mike Small won the U.S. Open flight with a 342.5 score. Ken Land and George Jablon followed at 349 with Don Pitchford and Tom Kummer snaring third place at 351.

Jerry Bartman and Bill Lattin prevailed in the British Open flight with 352.5. Tom Yarborough and Steve Gephardt were next with 358 with third going to Paul Schofield and Dom Cambeiro at 362.5.

Sandy Singer and Pat Corona easily won the PGA Flight with 338. Gene Raynes and Cheryl Blackard were second at 347.5 followed by Laurie Durant and Tammy Gephardt at 348.

In the 17-team elimination derby which followed play, Jack Tulls and Diane Jett survived chip-offs and putt-offs to win a nerve-wracking event. Bennet Hudson and Ginda Jones placed second with Ken Land and Johnny Joseph in third.

Anne Wade, Gertie Gessner, Dee Hay and Jo Montgomery of Hidden Valley Country Cub in Reno won low net with 249.

Mike Vance placed second with a 71 while Cody Sundberg was third third with 72.

The Silver State Professional Golf Tour is a series of scratch events open to all.
