CARSON CITY -- Freshman state Sen. Terry Care, D-Las Vegas, is being promoted to a sophomore without ever taking a test.
Care, who drew no opposition, will be automatically elected to a second four-year term for Senate District 7.
Care, chairman of the state Democratic Central Committee, could be a key player in the 2003 Legislature if the Democrats take control. He could replace Republican Mark James, who is running for County Commission, as chairman of the important Judiciary Committee.
There were three other races in Clark County for the Senate in which there was no primary election.
Sen. Maggie Carlton, D-North Las Vegas, will face Republican Augostin "Tino" Mendoza in her bid for a second term in Senate District 2.
Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, who has served in the Legislature since 1983, will run against Daniel Guinn, a Republican who is a buyer for the Community College of Southern Nevada, in Senate District 10. Guinn is not related to Gov. Kenny Guinn.
Republican Warren Hardy, who previously served in the Assembly and was a lobbyist, will face Democrat Adriana Martinez and Leon Catlett, an Independent American, in his bid to return to politics in Senate District 12.
