Candidate supports slots at tracks

Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002 | 9:44 a.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tim Hagan, the Democratic candidate for governor, said he'll support electronic slot machines on Ohio's racetracks to help increase state revenues.

Hagan said Tuesday his budget plan would raise $500 million annually from the slot machines, and would raise another $500 million over two years by closing loopholes in Ohio's tax laws.

Hagan planned today to release his proposals for serving as governor if elected Nov. 5. He said he won't back a tax increase unless lawmakers refuse to support his budget plan.

Hagan said his estimates show he would inherit a state budget at least $2.68 billion in the red.

Incumbent Bob Taft opposes electronic slot machines, saying they would lead to casinos, which Ohio voters have rejected twice.

Hagan said his estimates show he would inherit a state budget at least $2.68 billion in the red.

"I cannot offer a vision for this state's future without dealing with the mess I will inherit from Bob Taft," Hagan said.
