Letter: Mother’s school uniform stance harms her son

Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 | 10:16 a.m.

This letter is directed to the mother who refuses to comply with the mandatory uniform policy at her 7-year-old son's school.

Evidently your son will never play little league, high school or college sports, will never join Cub or Boy Scouts, will not work at McDonald's, will not become a police officer or firefighter or perhaps join the military. Even becoming a doctor or nurse is out. All of these avocations and occupations involve wearing the dreaded, freedom-suppressing "uniform."

Have you considered the positive side of wearing a unform? These clothes say, "I belong to the student body of this terrific school" or "I am proud to be part of this profession."

That you have left your son unaware of the controversy he will face on the first day of school is shocking. Is his 7-year-old's discomfort and embarrassment worth your asserting his freedom of expression?

As you say, when he is old enough to understand, you will teach him about his rights. Until that time, please consider your responsibility as his mother and allow him to join his classmates in what should be his happy school days.
