Savvy wine buys: Allegrini Valpolicella Classico ‘01
Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 | 8:20 a.m.
Until the producer Allegrini came along, the appellation called Valpolicella was looked upon with disdain by serious wine drinkers. It has long had a reputation for being a light and insipid wine, and indeed, even today, it is relatively low (12.5 percent) in alcohol content and on the light side in color.
But Allegrini has raised the bar in this charming Italian village, which is located between Milan and Venice, and the wines are uniformly excellent. This one has balanced acidity, moderate tannins and a robust cherry and dark fruit flavor.
It's delicious with both antipasti and pastas, and the price is right.
Available at Costco, $10.77.
