UNLV women finish sixth in Tennessee

Monday, Oct. 21, 2002 | 9:47 a.m.

The UNLV women's golf team slipped from third to sixth place in the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Intercollegiate tournament Sunday in Knoxville, Tenn.

Just two strokes off the lead heading into the finale, the Rebels responded with their worst score of the tourney, a 31-over par 319.

UNLV still managed to beat six of the nation's top 50 teams head-to-head, including eighth-ranked Tennessee. Auburn scorched the course in the final round, producing the best team round of the tournament at 292 to capture the victory.

UNLV's standout was freshman Sunny Oh, whose consistent play earned her a first career top-10 finish. She held fifth place throughout the tournament and finished only three strokes behind medalist Ashley Prange of North Carolina.

The Rebels' Hwanhee Lee tied for 18th and teammate Christine Hentzner was 21st.
